Never Outnumbered... hard to imitate

Half through a second listen of Prodigy's latest album, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. Despite the lack of Keith and Maxim and Leroy, who were essentially the "face" of the band, Liam Howlett has placed the music to the fore, with 12 tracks of electro-punk.

I never did like the first album, Experience which was too rave-like, but the band blew me away when I heard Music for the Jilted Generation, then Fat of the Land was just superb, but when a great song like "Firestarter" began to be played endlessly (and, worse still, Linda Nolan covering it on Stars in their Eyes) then you begin to think, hmm, is this really Prodigy?

Liam Howlett obviously thought so, and even though I liked their last single - "Baby's Got a Temper" - it felt dangerously close to being a musical parody.

So, after waiting two years, I've finally got my mitts on the latest album, and it's a corker: out goes Keith's wailing, and in return we've got bass-thumping beats, and some great tunes... plus a rather surprising vocal turn from Juliette Lewis.

I don't think this album will create new fans, but for the existing fanbase, it's an essential purchase.
