You can't help but imagine what the decision of Tony Blair would be if the hostage was one of his own family.
Personally, Iraq is quite simply turning into Vietnam: Bush started this war very much like a simpleton, and Blair followed like an obedient poodle. We know Bush hasn't the intelligence to actually read the intelligence reports, and as for Blair well he does have the intelligence but for some reason the UK must follow what the US does. No offence to you Yanks, but why?
As for France and Germany, they objected to the war purely because Iraq and Saddam was a major customer of theirs. Everyone knew that.
I don't usually advocate running away with tail between your legs, but has the UK ambassador stated yesterday in the news, Bush is the biggest asset to al-Qaeda's recruitment.
