Shock! Bears Defecate in the Woods!

"Tesco hit by Channel 4 charge of using child workers"

Though to clarify: I don't believe that Tesco knowingly employs child workers, but has the comments on the article attests, if we continue to buy cheap goods, where do you think they source these cheap goods? Why, the Far East and other developing countries of course, and where do you think the proliferation of child labour exists?

Yes, in the woods.

When I worked for a certain, fairly well-known crisp producer, I became aware that a lot of supermarket activities (BOGOFs, 'gondola ends') are actually funded by the supplier, who therefore loses out (which is where farmers get my sympathy, which they then lose for certain tractor-related issues).

If we continue to demand lower prices and normal quality, we move away from mainland Europe and the so-called developed nations, to where everything is cheaper. In the end, it all boils down to one question:

Do I want to pay £5.00 for an item, secure in the knowledge that some little kid somewhere spent 23 hours of one day making it, for the equivalent of 0.5p (if that)? Or do I pay £6.00, knowing that it was made by someone in the Black Country, who's paid above minimum wage in a factory that has a good Health & Safety record? I have to say, not being the richest person in the world, that as I get older, I favour the latter more and more.

I must admit, I'm guilty but I do consciously try to limit my shopping at this place, or at least spread my cash into other places, but they are so damn convenient...

I use the local greengrocer more often, lately, but please, shoot me if you see me buying something to drink from that bastion of chav-ism "Bargain Booze": call me snobbish, but naming what is essentially an off-licence in such way, it's almost has if you're de-valuing alcohol.

The name is almost has bad as that long-forgotten chain of shops called "Supercigs".

I posted a comment then and it's disappeared!

I use Tesco, simply because it's convenient, though I try to avoid it as much as possible. We live in a fairly small town now, with an excellent butchers (award winning, apparently) and a greengrocers (that's been trading for years, as my friend worked there whilst I worked at the Co-op to fund my driving lessons) that we tend to shop at.

I agree about 'Bargain Booze', though we very infrequently buy alcohol. As for SuperCigs, I remember them from my smoking days (though I actually bought most of my cigarettes from Tesco, ironically enough), but I didn't realise they'd gone out of business.
